Tasting With Industry Insiders: Wines of Southern France »

Jean-Marc and Eliane Lafage grow primarily Grenache (Blanc, Gris & Noir), Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Marsanne, Roussanne and Chardonnay with a significant proportion of the vines well over 50 years old. They harvest by hand and the winemaking is surprisingly uncomplicated with stainlesss steel for the fresher whites but mostly concrete tanks for the rest with a small amount of French oak demi-muids. Benefiting from a warm, dry climate, the estate is farmed organically. Mark Strassel, presenter.

New York Winemaker Series: Boundary Breaks with Bruce Murray »

Bruce Murray is a native of Syracuse, NY. After a career in media and publishing in New York City, he purchased a parcel of farmland in 2008 on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake, in Lodi, NY. At the time the 120-acre had been farmed for corn and soybeans. No vines had been planted on the site. Murray planted the first Riesling vines in 2009 and released the first Boundary Breaks wines in 2013. The Boundary Breaks team currently manages 32 acres of vines, with Riesling representing the vast majority of the plantings. Boundary Breaks currently sells its Rieslings in 25 states and three foreign countries. Its Dry Rieslings have twice been named to Wine Enthusiast’s list of Top 100 Wines in the World. Boundary Breaks Vineyard is located on the east side of Seneca Lake, just north of Lodi Point State Park. It is approximately 20 miles south of Geneva at the northern end of Seneca Lake and approximately 20 miles north or Watkins Glen at the southern end of Seneca Lake. The eastern side of Seneca Lake benefits from exposure to afternoon sun, which helps ripen grapes of all varieties. After planting its first vines in 2009, Boundary Breaks has focused on vineyard management technique, with the goal of producing maximum ripeness in its fruit. Grapes, like other fruit, express their most complete flavor profile when fully ripe. By leaving its fruit on the vine as long as possible, Boundary Breaks seeks to harvest ripe fruit that will yield wines with the most complex and varied flavor profiles. Come join Bruce as he pours and talks about his great wines from the Finger Lakes.

Dessert Wine Series: Port wines of Quinta do Noval »

One of the oldest port houses, Quinta do Noval is also arguably the greatest. It is unique among top port houses in that most of the ports are made from estate-grown fruit and, notably, all of the vintage Noval wines are from the single Quinta do Noval vineyard. Noval is mentioned in land registries going back to 1715, and has been sold just twice in that time, once in the late 19th century, and to its present owners in 1993. The tremendous rewards of the work done at the estate over the last fifteen years are visible across the range of Noval ports, and have placed Noval a step ahead of everyone in the Douro. Noval has, however, a reputation for being an innovative, independent producer. Noval’s focus on its vineyard and estate ports distinguishes it, but there are numerous other areas in which it has been a pioneer: o Quinta do Noval was the first to introduce blended tawnies with an indication of average age. o Noval introduced the first late-bottled vintage port, in 1958. o In response to a change in shipping laws in 1986, Noval became the first major port house to age, blend and store all its wines at its Quinta, in the Douro. Curtis Eaton of Vintus importers will be leading this "Dessert Wine Series" class.

Local Distiller Series: Black Button on National Button Day »

Since 1922 four generations of Head Distiller Jason Barret’s family have made buttons for high end men’s suits in the Rochester area. Being colorblind Jason was never destined to take over the family business but when he was a child the family would joke that if he did they could always switch to making just Black Buttons. Black Button was the first distillery since Prohibition to open in Rochester. Please join Jason and Jeff Shamp for a discussion on what makes Black Button different from all other Craft Distilleries. They will discuss the process that is involved in production of their award-winning spirits, why their spirits are at 84 proof, and will be sharing samples of “The Official Gin of Summer”, Four Grain Bourbon, and Bespoke Bourbon Cream.
